Job Description:
This position primarily supports the new undergraduate project-based computer science (CS) program. After completing two years of core studies either at MSU Mankato or another institution, students compete for a position in our upper-division CS program. During each of the four semesters in the upper-division program, students "learn computer science by doing computer science." The real-world, full-scale projects that supply the main curriculum for the program are provided by industry partners and academic researchers from around the world. The curriculum combines technical training with the professional skills development necessary to succeed in a computing career. Responsibilities in this position include but are not limited to coaching and supporting students' upper-division CS project work; teaching core and elective upper-division CS topics courses using active learning pedagogies; teaching lower-division core computing courses; advising undergraduate students; engaging in research/scholarly activities, including seeking funding individually or collaboratively; supporting student growth and educational experiences; continuing professional preparation; participating in service work for the program, department, University, and broader community.

The successful candidate will engage with industry and academic partners to bring in and execute the CS projects that drive the upper-division program; participate in additional curriculum design, instruction, and evaluation; conduct research productively and mentor students in research; help create innovative strategies for student recruitment, retention, and completion; and may be expected to develop external grant funding opportunities.

A typical faculty workload responsibility may include up to twenty four (24) credits of instruction per academic year.

The successful candidate may need to teach in other areas as assigned and qualified.

May be expected to develop and deliver face-to-face, hybrid, and on-line instruction at the Mankato campus, online, and/or at the university's additional locations, as assigned.

The successful candidate will collaborate with colleagues in curriculum design, instruction and evaluation, conduct research productively and mentor students in research, help create innovative strategies for student recruitment, retention, and completion, and may be expected to develop external grant funding opportunities.

All faculty members are expected to engage in scholarly or creative activity or research, in continuing preparation and study, in contributing to student growth and development, and in providing service to the university and community (See Article 22 and Appendix G of the IFO Master Agreement).

This position will advise undergraduate majors.

Required Qualifications:

Doctoral degree in computer science or closely related field conferred on an official transcript no later than the start date of appointment.

Demonstrated ability to serve a diverse population and apply an equity lens to this position including social justice and/or anti-racism.

Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated effective written, oral communication and/or presentation skills, including strong ability to communicate and collaborate with a diverse population of students, staff, and faculty as a member of teaching and/or research teams.

Demonstrated experience teaching and working with diverse student populations including first-generation students, second-language learners, international students, and/or other student populations that are under-represented in the STEM fields.

Demonstrated understanding of and ability to support project-based learning and associated advising and mentoring across the breadth of computer science, preferably with college-level students.

Demonstrated understanding of and ability to support development of industry and academic partner relationships, particularly as relates to garnering and supporting the execution of projects that serve as the curricular basis of the upper-division Computer Science program.

Ability to teach upper-division undergraduate topics courses in operating systems, network architecture, programming languages, databases, security, software testing, software engineering, artificial intelligence/machine learning, data science, and/or data engineering.

Demonstrated success or strong potential for productivity in research, grant writing, or scholarship.

Experience in industry, military, post-doctoral research, and/or formal and informal educational settings.

About:
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:Minnesota State University, Mankato operates its powerful and innovative undergraduate program in computer science based on project-based learning. This computer science program is unique in North America. It is modeled on the ABET-accredited and highly awarded project-based engineering programs pioneered by the Universitys Department of Integrated Engineering. The Computer Information Science Department in which the program is housed extends and modifies this educational approach while fostering a pedagogical model and intellectual community of scholars that support the programs rapid growth.

Students in the computer science program complete a lower-division core curriculum as well as most of a math minor before being admitted to the upper-division program, where they complete four project-based semesters. Projects are provided by regional, national, and global industry partners and both internal and external faculty researchers. The curriculum combines software design, computing research, and the technical fundamentals of computing, together with developing the professional skills necessary to succeed in a computing career, such as teamwork, time management, oral and written communication, project management, professional responsibility, and independent learning.

The computer science program was developed using the knowledge and techniques supported by recent research on the development of technical and professional competencies expected of the computer scientist of the future. The Department of Computer Information Science is comprised of 15 full-time faculty members actively engaged in teaching, research, and service. The department offers undergraduate majors in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Computer Information Technology, and Health Informatics; masters degrees in Information Technology, Information Security & Risk Management, Health Informatics and Analytics, and Data Science; and minors and certificates for students with varying interests and backgrounds.
