Physical and Biological Sciences: Assistant Professor in Materials Theory (Open until filled; initial review 1/4/2021)


The Division of Physical and Biological Sciences at the University of California (UC), Santa Cruz invites applications for a tenure track faculty position in materials theory at the Assistant Professor level. The Assistant Professor will be hired in the Department of Physics or the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry. Areas of research in the Physics Department include particle physics, astrophysics, biophysics, applied physics, and condensed matter physics. Areas of research in the Chemistry & Biochemistry Department include biochemistry/biophysical, physical, materials, organic/bioorganic, and inorganic/bioinorganic chemistry. The assigned department will depend on the research interests and areas of expertise of the selected candidate. Candidates with a strong record of publication in the field of theoretical and computational materials and with a strong commitment to research and teaching are encouraged to apply.

The selected candidate is expected to establish a vigorous research program in materials theory either within the Physics Department's condensed matter physics group, or within the Chemistry & Biochemistry Department's physical/materials chemistry group. Within the department, the selected candidate will be expected to teach Physics or Chemistry courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels and perform service to the department and university. The selected candidate is also expected to participate in the UC Santa Cruz Materials Science & Engineering Initiative by engaging in collaborative, interdisciplinary research and to teach and mentor in a future Materials Science & Engineering graduate program.

ACADEMIC TITLE
Tenure-track Assistant Professor

SALARY
Commensurate with qualifications and experience; academic year (nine-month basis).

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in Physics, Chemistry, or related field, and at least one year of postdoctoral research experience in theoretical and/or computational physics or chemistry related to materials at the time of application.

POSITION AVAILABLE
July 1, 2021, with the academic year beginning in September 2021. Position contingent on budgetary approval.
