Applied Research Laboratory and College of Engineering Joint Faculty Positions

The College of Engineering and the Applied Research Laboratory at The Pennsylvania State University in University Park, PA are pleased to invite applications for one or more joint faculty positions. Applicants should have extensive records of building large-scale collaborative partnerships and programs among academia, governmental agencies, industry, and research institutions. Applicants should also have qualifications appropriate for an appointment as a tenured or tenure-track Associate Professor or Professor in the College of Engineering.

The College of Engineering houses nearly 350 tenured faculty spread across fourteen different departments. The College educates nearly 9000 diverse undergraduate students and 1500 diverse graduate students. All undergraduate and graduate programs are ranked in the top forty. The College of Engineering was recently ranked number twenty-two by US News and World Report.

The Applied Research Laboratory is one of five US Navy and one of fourteen Department of Defense University Affiliated Research Centers. With over 1200 full-time employees and 200 student employees, the Laboratory is the second largest University Affiliated Research Center. The Laboratory's core research interests are focused in four areas: undersea systems; fluid dynamics and acoustics; advanced materials and manufacturing systems; and communications and cyber systems.

The Laboratory is an independent unit of the University but is collocated on the main campus at University Park. The Laboratory enjoys a collaborative environment with the College of Engineering. One of the goals of the Laboratory is to connect the fundamental research of the University to applied solutions for the Laboratory's government sponsors and corresponding industrial partners. One purpose of this joint faculty position is to strengthen that bridge by conducting research that spans the full spectrum of Department of Defense Research and Development activities.

It is anticipated that any successful candidate will spend about fifty percent of their time each year within the College of Engineering and fifty percent at the Applied Research Laboratory. The College and the Laboratory recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding governing this unique position. A candidate-unique agreement will be signed by both organizations relative to specific requirements and expectations. Although currently we are seeking one profoundly qualified candidate, if multiple candidates exhibit outstanding qualifications, more than one position may be filled.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in a field related to one of the following three technical areas that are of interest to both the College of Engineering and the Applied Research Laboratory:

1. Acoustics: expertise in signal processing, structural acoustics, hydroacoustics, acoustic transduction, physical acoustics, modeling and simulation of acoustic signatures, noise propagation, computational acoustics, and experimental acoustic methods. Ideal candidate with have domain knowledge in active and passive sonar, turbomachinery noise, and vibration and stress analysis.

2. Next Generation Materials: expertise in developing, synthesizing, and manufacturing advance materials, meta-materials, and/or multifunctional materials for unique design architectures and application in DoD relevant topics such as hypersonics, directed energy, power electronics, devices, and carbon-carbon fiber or ceramic matrix composites (CMC). Ideal candidate will have a fundamental understanding of data analytics and informatics to drive advanced materials processing, fabrication, testing, evaluation, health monitoring, and condition-based maintenance.

3. Resilient Positioning, Navigation, and Timing: expertise in methods, sensors, and systems that determine a platform's position, velocity, orientation, and absolute time. Research areas include methods that improve on vehicle motion sensing (accelerometers, gyroscopes, speed sensors), methods that exploit geophysical features (gravity, bathymetry, magnetics, celestial bodies), methods that exploit earth-fixed human-made signals (RF, Physical Structures, acoustics), and methods for time. Ideal candidate will have domain knowledge of Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security applications with platform constraints on Size, Weight, Power, Cost, and Performance.

Successful applicants will have demonstrated outstanding scholarly research and will have expressed a strong interest in engineering education. Those considered for the position should demonstrate an established record of defense-related research. The successful candidates are expected to teach courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels, develop an internationally-recognized, externally-funded research program, and contribute to the operation and promotion of the department, college, university, and profession through service. Appointments will be made at a rank commensurate with experience.

To apply, submit a single pdf file containing: a cover letter indicating at least one preferred home department within the College of Engineering and the names and addresses of four references; a full curriculum vitae containing a complete list of publications; separate statements of research, teaching interests, and commitment towards diversity and inclusion; and 3 published journal papers. Review of applicants will begin on February 1, 2021, and will continue until the positions are filled.
