Research Technologist
The Department of Medicine, Division of Rheumatology seeks a Research Technologist who possesses a solid foundation in basic laboratory techniques and experience with techniques associated with molecular biology and immunology. Capable of exercising independent judgment while participating in the planning of studies, conducting experiments and evaluating results.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

Participates in planning studies and evaluating/interpreting test results utilizing detailed knowledge of research laboratory procedures and practices involving modern molecular immunology. These lab-based duties will include:

  • The ability to perform routine laboratory techniques, exercise good judgment and assume responsibility for decisions, consequences and results.
  • Processing of blood samples from patients in various clinical research studies.
  • Isolation and manipulation of human blood cells.
  • Perform various assays of cellular immune function.
  • Independent troubleshooting of technical and experimental issues.
  • Select, perform and evaluate research methods; operate appropriate equipment.
  • Knowledge and employment of good sterile tissue culture techniques.
  • Uses various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, electronic mail, World Wide Web, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or test reports.
  • Uses good practices for data record keeping and analysis.
  • Uses universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials, including blood-borne pathogens.
  • Monitors inventory levels and proper storage of materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Keeps current knowledge of vendors and suppliers of materials specific to the laboratory requirements. Interacts with company representatives and obtaining quotations.
  • Responsible for ordering lab supplies and maintaining lab equipment.


Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in biological sciences, chemistry, physics or related fields. Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Specific experience with cell culture, ELISA, immunoprecipitation assays, Western blotting, and molecular cloning.

Physical Requirement:

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital, clinical and/or laboratory environment.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
