Women's Health Nurse Practitioner
General summary/purpose:

The Johns Hopkins University Student Health & Well-Being supports health education, primary care and mental health services for JHU students and learners across all nine schools within the University. In addition to health education, our integrated service delivery model provides in-person primary and mental health care options at our clinics as well as remote support though phone and online resources.

Our practice group is recruiting two Women's Health Nurse Practitioners (WHNP) in a full-time capacity at the Student Health and Wellness Center (SHWC) on the Homewood campus, and at University Health Services (UHS) on the East Baltimore campus. The WHNP will work collaboratively with other nurse practitioners and physicians across the University on other campuses, and may be called to provide care at any time at other locations, including proposed extended services to our Washington, DC campus.

The WHNP is responsible for providing high quality and effective patient care through the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illness and injury in the gynecological field. The WHNP provides direct patient care with a significant emphasis on health maintenance and preventive measures, and shares responsibility for the provision of high quality health care in compliance with state, federal, and ambulatory accreditation requirements.

Specific duties & responsibilities:

Provide women's health services as follows:
  • Annual gynecologic/well-women's exams
  • Problem-based care, including but not limited to assessment and management of:
  • Vaginal complaints
  • Breast problems
  • UTIs
  • Menstrual irregularities and vaginal bleeding
  • Hirsutism
  • Abnormal Pap smears
  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Contraceptive management, including initiation and surveillance of contraceptive methods; management of contraceptive side effects; providing contraception to medically complex patients, either alone or in consultation with a physician when necessary
  • Placement and management of contraceptive implants and intrauterine devices
  • Diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections
  • Women's health issue consultations for SHWC and UHS providers
  • Assess patients using skills in interviewing, history-taking and physical diagnosis, and initial screening and diagnostic tests
  • Apply evidence-based decision-making when assessing and treating patients
  • Provide continuity of care and coordination of available healthcare services using appropriate referral to agencies and private physicians
  • Assume responsibility and accountability for organizing time and workload to meet patient, staff and departmental needs
  • Systematically record information in an electronic medical record in accordance with University, state, and federal medical/legal requirements.
  • Provide independent management of GYN complaints, including counseling, testing, diagnosis, treatment, and/or follow-up
  • Refer patients appropriately to gynecologic specialty providers as needed in the case of issues too complex or complicated to be managed by a WHNP
  • Attend educational programs and show evidence of continued self-development and professional involvement by participating in activities and educational programs of professional organizations
  • Oversee tracking of abnormal PAPs, and write-up PAP benchmarking study every other year
  • Current hours 8 am to 5 pm but may flex in the future to meet clinical needs as requested.
  • Available for evening call phone coverage of patient issues and for equitable, reciprocal coverage of WHNP colleagues when out of town.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum qualifications (mandatory):
  • Master's degree in nursing: Registered nurse license and Certified as a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP). Must be licensed as a WHNP in the State of Maryland or other state where practicing/eligible for licensure to practice in the State of Maryland. Current CPR certification. Must have DEA and Maryland CDS license or be eligible to apply for it. Must meet all credentialing requirements of Johns Hopkins Hospital and continued employment is contingent upon successful completion of JHH credentialing process.
  • Demonstrated competence in women's health, with both young adult and adult population. Experience in a university setting preferred but not required. 2-4 years of clinical experience as a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner preferred, but not required.
  • Philosophical commitment to the care, development and education of students and trainees in an educational setting and willingness to adapt to the unique needs of learner populations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the delivery of health care to a diverse learner/adult population.
  • Proven ability to relate effectively to a wide variety of people of various ages and backgrounds including an understanding and appreciation of gender, cultural, ethnic and international differences.
  • Experience and capability to use electronic medical record.
  • Ability to function as a Nurse Practitioner in this position is contingent upon successful completion of the JHH credentialing process.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
