Pasadena City College is hiring a Full-Time, tenure-track Kinesiology Instructor/Intercollegiate Head Men's Basketball Coach, reporting to the Dean of Kinesiology, Health and Athletics.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE KINESIOLOGY INSTRUCTOR:
The Kinesiology Instructor provides high-quality, student-centered instruction and contributes to the development and success of the Kinesiology and Health programs.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Teach Kinesiology, Health, lecture, activity, and/or laboratory courses using current, inclusive, and effective instructional practices that support student learning and achievement.
- Provide students with clear course information, including syllabi, grading criteria, and expectations; maintain accurate records of enrollment, attendance, and student progress.
- Use instructional technology and learning platforms effectively, including web-based tools and course management systems.
- Teach in a variety of formats, including face-to-face, hybrid/blended, and online modalities as assigned.
- Maintain scheduled office hours and provide academic support and mentoring to students, including those pursuing Kinesiology degrees, careers, or internships.
- Collaborate with faculty and staff to develop, review, and improve curriculum, certificates, and programs of study, including participation in program review, strategic planning, and student learning outcomes assessment.
- Participate actively in department, division, and college shared governance through committee service, meetings, and institutional initiatives.
- Engage in ongoing professional development to remain current in the discipline, pedagogy, and teaching practices.
- Assist in the development and maintenance of instructional and program support materials.
- Maintain required certifications, including First Aid/AED/CPR.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues and administrators to support student success and program quality.
- Comply with District policies and procedures and perform other duties as assigned by the Dean.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC COACH (MEN'S BASKETBALL HEAD COACH):
The Head Coach is responsible for the leadership, organization, and administration of the Men's Basketball program, supporting student-athlete success both academically and athletically while ensuring full compliance with institutional and athletic governing regulations.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Recruit and retain student-athletes in accordance with Pasadena City College procedures and California Community College Athletic Association (3C2A) rules and regulations.
- Organize and supervise all aspects of the Basketball program, including practices, conditioning, competition preparation, and coaching of student-athletes.
- Support student-athlete academic progress, eligibility, transfer preparation, and overall success by maintaining appropriate documentation and monitoring requirements.
- Prepare annual budget requests and manage program resources in alignment with the approved athletic budget.
- Develop and maintain positive relationships with local high schools, community partners, and four-year institutions to support recruitment and student transfer opportunities.
- Conduct opponent scouting and coordinate video analysis and recruitment materials.
- Coordinate team travel and logistics for competitions in collaboration with athletic department staff.
- Ensure compliance with District, conference, and 3C2A policies, procedures, and decorum standards.
- Participate in required meetings, professional development activities, and Kinesiology/Athletics in-service events.
- Collaborate with sports information staff on public relations and program promotion.
- Coordinate with equipment, athletic training, and support staff regarding scheduling, safety, and inventory management.
- Work collaboratively with the Athletic Director, Dean, and college foundation partners to support fundraising and program development efforts.
- Participate in hiring, supervision, and annual evaluation of assistant coaches with a focus on student-centered practices.
- Fulfill coaching duties that may include evenings, weekends, travel, and off-campus assignments.
- Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the Dean, Athletic Director, or Vice President of Instruction.
- Continued Head Coach assignment is contingent upon satisfactory performance evaluations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's degree in kinesiology, physical education, exercise science, education with an emphasis in physical education, kinesiology, physiology of exercise, or adaptive physical education.
OR
- Bachelor's degree in any of the above AND a Master's degree in any life science, dance, physiology, health education, recreation administration, or physical therapy.
OR
- A valid California Community College Instructor Credential in Physical Education.
OR
- The equivalent

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Teaching & Curriculum Development
- Experience teaching Kinesiology, Health, or related courses at the community college level, preferably serving a diverse student population.
- Demonstrated use of student-centered, inclusive, and innovative instructional practices that support student engagement, persistence, and completion.
- Experience developing or revising lower-division curriculum, certificates, or programs aligned with student success initiatives and high-impact practices.
- Ability to teach courses in multiple areas of the Kinesiology/Health curriculum, including activity-based fitness courses, theory courses (such as Introduction to Kinesiology, Wellness, First Aid, or Athletic Training), and health education courses.
- Experience designing innovative lesson plans and implementing effective course assessment strategies, including Student Learning Outcomes evaluation.
- Distance Education & Instructional Technology
- Training or recent experience in online and/or hybrid instruction and knowledge of distance education best practices.
- Experience using learning management systems (such as Canvas) and other instructional technologies to enhance student learning.
- Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Student Support
- Demonstrated commitment to culturally responsive and equity-focused teaching practices that support students from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds.
- Experience mentoring students and supporting historically underrepresented populations in achieving academic and career goals.
- Experience contributing to programs or initiatives that increase access, retention, and success for underrepresented students.
- Coaching & Athletic Program Experience
- Successful basketball coaching experience at the community college, high school, and/or four-year college level (Head or Assistant Coach).
- Experience recruiting and scouting student-athletes and supporting their academic progress and connection to campus resources.
- Experience overseeing operational aspects of a competitive basketball program, including scheduling, travel coordination, camps, and program development.
- Program Development & Institutional Engagement
- Experience participating in program review, strategic planning, or annual instructional planning processes.
- Experience developing wellness initiatives, certificate programs, curriculum, or grant-funded programs in Kinesiology, Health, Athletics, or related areas.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of effective teaching strategies and the ability to adapt instructional approaches to meet the needs of students with varying academic preparation, learning styles, and educational goals.
- Knowledge of culturally sustaining pedagogical practices and strategies for supporting historically underrepresented and racially minoritized students in higher education.

THE ASSIGNMENT:
Ten Month, 100% - Tenure-track position beginning Fall 2026.
Thirty-four (34) hours per week consisting of a combination of in-class teaching and preparation for teaching; five and one half (5.5) hours of additional time for student conferences; and five and one half (5.5) hours for professional growth and development, College governance and other professional responsibilities. The College has two 16-week semesters and offers a full range of courses beginning at 7:00 a.m. and ending at 11:00 p.m. Faculty must be available to teach anytime within those hours. Faculty may be offered the opportunity to teach classes during winter and summer intersessions.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Successful completion of live scan clearance and TB screening.
- Proof of eligibility to work in the United States and signing of loyalty oath per government codes 3100-3109.
- Meeting applicable eligibility requirements under CalPERS or CalSTRS if you are a current or former member.
