Job Description:
This position primarily supports the new project-based computer science program. Responsibilities include but are not limited to teaching core and elective upper division topics using project-based and active learning pedagogies and supporting upper-division project work; teaching lower division core courses; advising computer science major students; engaging in research/scholarly activities, including seeking funding for curricular support and/or research activities individually or collaboratively; supporting student growth and educational (project-based) experiences; continuing professional preparation; participating in the work of the program/department and service to the University and community.
  • A typical faculty workload responsibility may include up to twenty four (24) credits of instruction per academic year.



  • The successful candidate may need to teach in other areas as assigned and qualified.

  • May be expected to develop and deliver face-to-face, hybrid, and on-line instruction at the Mankato campus, online, and/or at the university's additional locations, as assigned.

  • The successful candidate will collaborate with colleagues in curriculum design, instruction and evaluation, conduct research productively and mentor students in research, help create innovative strategies for student recruitment, retention, and completion, and may be expected to develop external grant funding opportunities.

  • All faculty members are expected to engage in scholarly or creative activity or research, in continuing preparation and study, in contributing to student growth and development, and in providing service to the university and community (See Article 22 and Appendix G of the IFO Master Agreement).

  • This position will advise undergraduate majors.



Required Qualifications:
  • Doctoral degree in computer science or closely related field conferred on an official transcript at the date of appointment.



  • Demonstrated ability to serve a diverse population and apply an equity lens to this position including social justice and/or anti-racism.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning environment.



  • Demonstrated effective written, oral communication and/or presentation skills.

  • Demonstrated understanding of and willingness to support project-based learning across the breadth of computer science.

  • Demonstrated experience teaching diverse student populations including first-generation students, second-language learners, and international students.

  • Ability to teach upper-division topics in operating systems, network architecture, programming languages, databases, security, software testing, software engineering, artificial intelligence, data science, and/or data engineering.

  • Experience using active learning and/or project-based strategies to teach college computing courses or work with college-level students.

  • Demonstrated desire and commitment to teaching and mentoring undergraduate computer science students.

  • Strong ability to communicate and collaborate with students, staff, and faculty.

  • Demonstrated willingness to work individually and collaboratively as a member of teaching and research teams.

  • Demonstrated success or strong potential for productivity in research, grant writing, creative activity, or scholarship.

  • Experience in university/college teaching at undergraduate and/or graduate level.

  • Experience in industry, military, post-doctoral research, and/or formal and informal educational settings.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:Minnesota State University, Mankato operates its powerful and innovative undergraduate program in computer science on the basis of project-based learning. The computer science program, modeled on ABET-accredited and highly awarded project-based engineering programs pioneered by the Universitys Department of Integrated Engineering, is unique in North America. The Computer Information Science Department extends and modifies this educational approach while fostering a pedagogical model and intellectual community of scholars that support the programs rapid growth.

Students in the computer science program complete a lower-division core curriculum as well as most of a math minor before being admitted to the upper-division program where they complete four project-based semesters. Projects are provided by regional, national, and global industry partners and faculty research programs. The curriculum combines software design, computing research, and the technical fundamentals of computing, together with developing the professional skills necessary to succeed in a computing career, such as teamwork, time management, oral and written communication, project management, professional responsibility, and independent learning. Students have the option of completing a research thesis in lieu of one project semester during their final year.

The computer science program was developed using the knowledge and techniques supported by recent research on the development of technical and professional competencies expected of the computer scientist of the future. The Department of Computer Information Science is comprised of 15 full-time faculty members actively engaged in teaching, research, and service. The department offers undergraduate majors in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Computer Information Technology, and Health Informatics; masters degrees in Information Technology, Information Security & Risk Management, Health Informatics and Analytics, and Data Science; and minors and certificates for students with varying interests and backgrounds.
